EHS heads into ‘Battle of the Bridge’ game with 8-0 record

The Hornets whipped Clover Park 70-7 on Monday.

For high school football players on both sides of the county line, the regular season concludes Friday with the “Battle of the Bridge.”

The annual contest between Enumclaw and White River high schools will kick off at 7 p.m. This year’s game will be staged on the White River campus.

The showdown will match Plateau programs heading in vastly different directions.

Enumclaw High played Monday of this week, thrashing Clover Park 70-1 and pulling into Buckley sporting an 8-0 season record; as of the last game, the team was 6-0 in South Puget Sound League 2A play, ranked No. 2 in the state AP poll and awaiting postseason play.

The Monday game for EHS was a scheduling oddity. Enumclaw was slated to play Clover Park on Thursday, Oct. 20, but the Timberwolves’ previous game had been pushed to Monday, Oct. 17. That would have meant playing a game on just three days’ rest. So, the Enumclaw/Clover Park contest was delayed to the 24th.

White River, on the other hand, will take to its home turf with a 1-7 overall record. The squad is 0-6 in SPSL 2A games and will finish the campaign Nov. 4 with a nonleague road trip to Kent-Meridian High. The traditional “Week 10” pairings are between squads who will not participate in postseason pairings.

White River last played the evening of Oct. 21, traveling to Franklin Pierce High. The Hornets fell 34-7 to the Cardinals.
