EPD’s fireworks complaints doubled during the Fourth of July

There were 14 complaints this year, plus five fires of various types.

It’s hard to tell if Enumclaw had more fireworks this Fourth of July than last year, but complaints to police more than doubled.

According to Enumclaw Police Department Commander Mike Graddon, the department received 14 calls, up from six in 2022.

While King County encourages people to report illegal fireworks on unincorporated land online, Enumclaw continues to utilize 911 for firework ordinance violations because the department isn’t overloaded with complaints.

“If we get to the point where we’re dealing with dozens of complaints, we’re going to set up a fireworks complaint line or something,” Graddon said.

While no injuries were reported, Enumclaw Fire Department Chief Randy Fehr said there were five incidents his crews responded to: two house fires, two brush fires, and a rubbish fire in a dumpster.

Neither of the house fires resulted in significant damage.

It’s unclear if the rise in firework complaints correlates with a rise in firework usage; the Courier-Herald has attempted to contact the TNT Fireworks vendor that pops up in the Walgreens parking lot, but did not receive an immediate answer.
