Editor’s note: The following is a press release from Mount Rainier National Park, and has been updated from an earlier press release.
Due to updated information on regional fire risks, Mount Rainier National Park will implement a parkwide fire ban starting Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024.
The press release dated Aug. 7, 2024, instituting a fire ban only at the White River Campground starting Friday, Aug. 9 has been rescinded.
Beginning Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, until lifted, Mount Rainier National Park will implement a parkwide fire ban. All campfires and the ignition of wood, briquettes, or any fuel in fire pits, fire pans, and barbeque grills will be prohibited. This ban is in place to reduce the risk of human-caused wildland fire area-wide during hot, dry conditions and high fire danger. Campfires will be prohibited in the park, including in White River Campground, Ohanapecosh Campground and Cougar Rock Campground.
The fire ban supports regional incident management efforts by reducing the risk of wildland fire on park lands and the subsequent need to draw from limited firefighting resources. Use of portable, petroleum-filled cooking stoves, heating devices, and/or lanterns using liquefied or bottled fuel are permissible provided such devices can be turned off.
Discharging, or using any kind of fireworks, tracer ammunition or other incendiary devices in any location on federal lands is always prohibited. If you observe smoke or flames inside the park or on nearby lands, please dial 911 or notify a ranger.
Current information and any subsequent updates on fire bans at Mount Rainier National Park will be posted on the alerts section of the park’s website. More information about visiting the park can be found at the Mount Rainier National Park website. Current campground information is posted on the park’s website. Mount Rainier National Park’s timed entry reservation system remains in effect through Sept. 2, 2024.
