432nd in Enumclaw to close for eight weeks

King County is replacing two aging tunnel fish culverts with a bridge.

A small road in Enumclaw will be closed for two months for a county culvert construction project.

King County will be working on SE 432nd St. from Aug. 12 through Oct. 11 to replace two aging culvert tunnels underneath the road with one large box culvert.

The current barrier (tunnel) culverts are supposed to allow fish to make their way to Newaukum Creek, north of the road.

However, these culverts are “worn out”, according to the county, as the tunnels have been damaged during storms and are wither too small for the volume of water that flows through them, making it hard for the fish to move through, or have so little water that also prevents fish from reaching the northern creek.

Instead of replacing the tunnels, King County will be constructing a box culvert — which is a fancy way to say they’re constructing a special bridge with free-flowing water underneath.

With 432nd closed, recommended detours include using 268th Ave., 434th St., and 284th Ave.

The total cost of this project is coming out to be $2.175 million.
