Tahoma, the top-ranked Class 4A school in the state, edged Enumclaw, the No. 1 Class 3A team, Saturday at the Spud Walley tournament in Sedro Woolley. The Bears ran up 257 points among the 15 teams to best EHS’s 170. Neighboring Orting, the defending Class 1A champion and current No. 1, was third with 162 points.

The Hornets put four in the championship finals with defending state champion Lucas Somera earning the 145-pound crown. The EHS junior topped Daniel Haniger of Tahoma with a 5-3 decision.

Travis Reano went up against two-time state champion Drew Templeman of Orting, who pinned the EHS senior in 1-minute, 22-seconds for the 132-pound crown.

Hornet teammate T.J. Cormier also fell by fall in the championship match. Tahoma’s Mathew Hopikins pinned the 195-pounder  in the opening 35 seconds.

Colten Malek went toe-to-toe with James Trull of Bellevue at 220 pounds, losing the 5-4 decision in the end.

The Hornets’ Tyke Reid finished third at 120 pounds.

Saywer Lane was fourth at 113, while Justin Mitchell, 152, and Kelyn Wallin, 182, finished sixth.
