EHS’ Paulson earns Class 3A all-state team honors

His success as a linebacker last year caught the attention of the Washington State Football Coaches Association.

Enumclaw High’s Colton Paulson certainly made a lasting impression on the football field, earning top all-league honors during the fall season. But his accomplishments have been noticed at the statewide level, as well.

Early last week, the Hornet senior was named to the Class 3A all-state team, a collection of 45 gridiron standouts from all corners of Washington. All-state honors were posted Jan. 5 by the Washington State Football Coaches Association.

Paulson was a threat on both offense and defense for the Hornets but was singled out for all-state recognition as a linebacker.

During his senior season, the 6 foot, 1 inch Paulson was credited with 77 tackles, 45 of those being of the solo variety with 13 resulting in a loss of yardage for the opposition. Additionally, he recovered three fumbles and intercepted a pass.

An all-around standout for coach Mark Gunderson’s squad, Paulson also hauled in 34 passes during his senior season, good for 480 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was credited with 545 all-purpose yards after factoring in 15 yards on three rushing attempts plus kick and punt returns (and a six yard gain following his interception).

On the local front, Paulson clearly caught the eye of opposing coaches. At the conclusion of the 3A North Puget Sound League season, coaches voted him co-Defensive Player of the Year and named him a first team, all-league wide receiver.
