Junior Tiara Killmer brought home Bonney Lake’s first state track and field title by winning the Class 3A girls shot put Saturday at at Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma.

Killmer, who has thrown in excess of 40 feet this season, won the state title with a toss of 39 feet, 7.75 inches – two inches better than second-place Carolina Siofele of Union High.

This was Killmer’s first year of competing in track and the first state championship for a female in the school’s short history.

“I knew I was going to get it,” Killmer said. “Just like the mentality I had in my pregame thinking, it was just in me.”

The winning throw came in Killmer’s first attempt in the preliminaries.

Killmer said she was a little disappointed she didn’t reach 40 feet, but was pleased with the outcome.

“I came out here, did my best and that’s all that matters,” she said.

Freshman Adara Winder was a big surprise at Saturday’s shot put. She placed third with a throw of 38-2.

With the performance in the shot, the Panthers collected 37 points for a fourth-place finish behind champion Rainier Beach, Columbia River and Ferndale.

The Panthers’ 1,600-meter boys relay team missed a chance to bring home a state title as Mount Spokane edged Bonney Lake for the 3A title.

Brandon Bauchem was in the lead heading toward the final 100 meters when the Mount Spokane runner came around to nip Bauchem at the finish line. Mount Spokane won in 3 minutes, 21.76 seconds, while the Panthers finished at 3:22.03.

The boys finished 21st in the overall team standings with 12 points. North Central took the title with 52 points.

In the girls’ 800 run, junior Veronica Stinnett finished seventh with a time of 2:19.54, less than five seconds behind Lakeside’s Madeline Rathburn, who posted a winning time of 2:14.96.

Stinnett also place seventh in the 1,600.

On Friday, senior Theresa Edwards took second in the 3,200 run. She was three seconds behind Seattle Prep’s Carey Park with a personal-best time of 11:03.85 and was eight seconds ahead of Columbia River’s Sarah Bobbe.

Shelby Rowland, after finishing with the eighth-best time in the 100 hurdle prelims, ran a 15.15 Saturday to take fourth place. It was her personal best in the event.

Bonney Lake’s Chris Pokorny was fifth in the boys’ 400 dash. He finished with a time of 49.96 – a personal best and was less than a second behind first-place Josh Bland of Hanford.

The girls’ 400-meter relay team finished sixth with a time of 50.08 seconds.
