Heading into its last scheduled game of the regular season Monday at Enumclaw’s Boise Creek facility, the White River fastpitch squad was sporting a 3-10 South Puget Sound League 3A mark and was on the threshold of being eliminated from any chance of a post-season appearance.

Had the Hornet softball club not beaten Sumner 11-10 Friday in 10 innings, the Hornets’ final regular season contest would have been for nothing but Plateau bragging rights.

As it was, though, the slated rendezvous with its cross river rival meant far more. It meant that a scrappy squad which began the season 0-10 rebounded to the extent that it still was on the verge of making the playoff scene in its last regular season game.

In the Sumner matchup, Hornet junior centerfielder Aubrey Custer went 4-for-5 from the plate and contributing five runs batted in, helping her contingent come back from a three-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth.

Sumner scored in the top of the tenth.

White River refused to give up, registering a tandem of runs to prevail 11-10, when Kandi Kujawa crushed a double to notch the game-winning RBI.
