The regular-season finale for Enumclaw and White River high’s girls wrestling teams bodes well for the postseason. Enumclaw’s top-ranked and defending state champion Chantelle Bailey won the 171-pound title Saturday at the Lady Wolfpack Invite in Mill Creek, Wash. Teammate Rose Johnson placed third, Jade Paterson was fourth and Kassandra Renfrow fifth as the Hornets finished seventh among the 36 teams.

White River took six girls to the tournament with Kamy Padgett and Samantha Mitchell each finishing third. The Hornets’ claimed a 13th-place team finish.

Both teams will compete in the subdistrict tournament Friday and Saturday at Auburn Mountainview High, where the top four fininshers will advance to the regional tournament Feb. 13 and attempt to earn a spot at state.

Sedro Woolley won Saturday’s tournament with Yelm, Mount Baker and Rogers lumped together for second, third and fourth. Burlington-Edison took the fifth spot and Federal Way was listed sixth, although their point total was the same as Enumclaw.

For Enumclaw, Bailey started the day with a first-round bye and then scored three straight pins, including one in 4 minutes, 31 seconds over Kylah Williams of Rogers for the championship.

“She’s just wrestling real well right now,” EHS coach Jerry Scheidt said. “She’s got tough competition just in our subdistrict and that’s what we’re concentrating on right now.”

Johnson also started the tournament with a bye and then earned a 43-second quick pin before dropping into the consolation bracket where she scored two more first-round pins, including one over teammate Jade Paterson for third. Paterson, who opened the tournament with two straight pins, added a third in the consolation bracket to earn the spot opposite Johnson.

Renfrow scooted by on a bye then a pin before falling in the consolation bracket. Maranda Long also wrestled for the Hornets.

For White River, Padgett pinned her Burlington-Edison opponent for the opening win. After suffering a loss in the second round she worked her way through the consolatuion round with a bye and three straight opening-round pins, including a 58-second fall over Jessica Taranenko of Mount Baker, who Padgett has lost two three times, and the 54-second one over Morgan Michels of Yelm for third.

Mitchell kicked off the tournament with a bye and a pin, before finding herself in the consolation bracket, where she scored a 4-2 decsion over Kathryn Fogle of Yelm and pinned Taylor Stagliano of Kennedy Catholic for third.

Morgan Shirey, Jesslyn Blue, Nicole Crain and Olivia Guinn also wrestled for the Hornets.
