Kahne overcomes obstacles for 15th

Enumclaw NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Kasey Kahne raced back to a day-high third place after overcoming a throttle issue Sunday afternoon in the Pocono 500 in Long Pond, Pa. Racing third in what became a fuel-mileage race, Kahne had to pit in the closing laps and finished 15th.

“We had a really good Budweiser Dodge today,” the No. 9 driver said. “To start up front, have a throttle cable issue early in the race, fall back to 41st and race our way all the way up to third (place) was awesome. I can’t tell you how great of a job that Kenny (Francis, crew chief) and the Budweiser guys did in the pits all day. We knew that everybody was chasing fuel mileage late in the race and so were we; unfortunately, we were on the wrong side of it.”

Sprint Cup points’ leader Tony Stewart pushed the fuel envelope and won the race.

The 15th place finish left Kahne in 14th in drivers’ standings, two spots away from the Top 12 which will race for the title in the final 10 races of the season, but Sprint Cup racing continues Sunday from Michigan. Television coverage begins at 9:30 a.m. on TNT.

EHS graduates offer basketball camp

For the third consecutive year, former Enumclaw High School and Seattle Pacific University all-American basketball star Tony Binetti will team up with the city of Enumclaw’s Park and Recreation Department to present the Plateau Pro Basketball Camp.

Camp will be July 27-29 in Enumclaw High’s Chuck Smith Gymnasium for boys entering grades three through eight.

The 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. day camp will feature another EHS graduate, local pro Ryan McDade (who most recently played in Sweden) and will focus on individual instruction, the importance of team play, sound fundamental teaching of offensive and defensive hoop skills as well as daily drills and actual games. A handful of experienced cage coaches and counselors will also be on hand.

All campers will receive a T-shirt and basketball as part of their paid registration fee of $110. Those interested in signing up should contact Binetti at either his e-mail address tonybinetti@gmail.com or cell phone, 360-367-0097. Although preregistration is encouraged, boys can sign up on the first day of camp.

Enumclaw Parks and Recreation is also able to register those interested. The department is housed at the Enumclaw Expo Center or can be reached at 360-825-3594. A few free scholarships are also being offered, to be determined on a case-by-case basis.
