First-year coach Jer Argo is inheriting a strong corps of returning veterans for the White River boys golf team.

“It should be an exciting season,” said Argo, who replaces longtime leader Al Novak, who retired from both coaching and teaching.

Ryne Peterson, Trever Anderson, Zahn Brooks and Tanner Sherstobitoff – all juniors – return to the Hornets’ varsity scorecard.

Peterson and Anderson played in the state qualifier this spring and are looking sharp in practice. Brooks also is playing solid golf in the early days of practice.

Junior newcomers Zach Howard and Tanner Williams look to contribute at the varsity level as well.

Incoming freshman Bryce Dahl has impressed Argo in the early going and has a shot at making the varsity squad.  Sophomores Trenton Regis, Ryan Kolisch, Kasey Kilwine, Zach Thornhill and Logan Goethals, as well as freshmen Drew Kacer and Matt Walker, round out the Hornet roster.

The Hornets’ first match is 3:15 p.m. Thursday in Tacoma against Franklin Pierce and Washington.

Coach Jason Swaser moves from the girls and boys tennis programs to girls golf this season.

“I’ve been waiting for that position to open forever,” said Swaser, who replaces Argo. “I’m excited to be out coaching golf with these girls.”

Nine girls have been hitting the links at Tapps Island, Sumner Meadows and the driving range in anticipation of the season’s home opener at 3:15 p.m. with Washington and Franklin Pierce.

WRHS lost perennial postseason golfer Tia Johnson to graduation, but return Caitlyn Miller Drew McCarty, Sutton Mills, Hannah Dominquez and Daniel Garner.
