With a varsity roster decimated by graduation, the White River Hornets are looking for a new identity as they prepare for a final season of South Puget Sound League 3A play.

Next year, White River slips into the Class 2A ranks and joins a new division of the South Puget Sound League.

A consistent factor in Hornet soccer circles is the team of coach Russ DeFord and assistant Travis Tremblay.

“It’s sort of a rebuilding year for us,” Tremblay said following the first week of practice, noting that White River saw 14 seniors depart after the 2009 campaign.

Last year brought highs and lows for the Hornets who were at one time undefeated and ranked No. 6 in the statewide polls. Internal factors worked against the team, which made a postseason appearance but exited quicker that anyone had hoped.

While there are plenty of new varsity faces, there are proven veterans in seniors Cameron Sautner, a defender, and striker Jake Dedge. Juniors who played varsity as sophomores a year ago include Joshua Kirk and Chase Butler.

The coaching staff will get its first look at this year’s bunch Tuesday at Auburn Mountainview.
