Bonney Lake had a busy week! The Bonney Lake baseball team took the league title against Sumner, and Sumner choir singers get excellent scores in the state competition. Also, Spartan senior Hashwinder Singh came back from Washington D.C. to tell us about the U.S. Senate Youth Program. In other school news, the Sumner School District will be providing Chromebooks for all students 6th through 12th grade to use both at school and home. Finally, get ready for the Presidential Primary, because ballots have been mailed out.
As one election ends, another beings. The Washington state Presidential Primary election officially started today, May 6, with ballots having been mailed out yesterday to Pierce County voters.
The Sumner High School choir just wrapped up another successful year by sending two Spartans to state. Juniors Janelle Purser and Elly Mark both sang at the state solo and ensemble contest last weekend at Central Washington University. Purser and Mark sang together and separately. For their ensemble, they received an “excellent” rating.
The time for heavy textbooks and clunky computer carts may be coming to an end in the Sumner School District. in the Sumner School District.
At the beginning of the 2016 school year, every student from the sixth grade and up will be receiving their own Chromebook to use at school and take home.
Editor’s note: The Courier-Herald reported in the April 13 article “Enumclaw residents oppose rural pot grows” that five marijuana businesses had pending licenses to operate outside the Enumclaw city limits. There are four marijuana businesses with pending licenses.
After Sumner’s loss to Bonney Lake 10-0 yesterday, the Spartans were determined not let the last game of the season get away from them so easily. But while the game was a tough fight, the Panthers came away with a 7-5 win, taking the league championship.
It’s still many years before Sumner High School senior Hashwinder Singh could be elected to represent his state in Washington D.C., but his trip to the nation’s capitol last March has certainly taken him a step or two closer.
Black Diamond has found itself without a city attorney, and the city council has hired its own legal representation with one big question on the table: who will pay, the city or council members? Also, Green River College students and faculty organize a walk out in protest of the current college administration and how it is handling budget cuts. May is also Wildfire Awareness month with an educational event about how to prepare for a wildfire emergency with King County, and speaking of fire, the Fire District #28 levy lid lift measure looks to be passing.
Lots of East Pierce Fire & Rescue news this week: the department received a donation of six new oxygen mask kits for our pets. Also, as of Friday, April 29, the department’s levy lift measure is being approved by voters. Also this week, a Bonney Lake resident talks about the Boston Marathon she just ran, and the Spartans take on the Panthers in a head-to-head tennis match.
Smoke inhalation isn’t just a problem for people during a fire – it’s a problem for their pets, too. Now, the fire department is better equipped to rescue pets with the help of specially-designed oxygen masks. The donation of these six new mask kits (which come with three masks of different sizes to fit most animals with a snout) comes from Invisible Fence of Seattle and their Project Breathe program.
Sumner High School hosted a head-to-head girls tennis match April 19 with Bonney Lake, beating the visiting Panthers 4-1. As the teams stand, the Spartans are tied for the best record in the SPSL 3A with an 8-1 mark. Sumner’s only loss so far was to Auburn Mountainview on April 6. The Panthers hold a 2-8 record, but the team has room to improve down the stretch.
Councilwoman Janie Edelman made her feelings clear at the beginning of the three and a half hour long council meeting on April 21 – the Black Diamond City Council is looking less like a body of elected officials and more like a late night comedy show. And while some people found the scene funny, much of the content wasn’t.
Enumclaw had a busy week with the White River bridge planned to be closed until Saturday, but luckily, it was opened three days early! Other area news include the April 7 Black Diamond council meeting, where council members attempted to fire the city attorney, aA former manager of Enumclaw’s Friendship House being found guilty of stealing money from the houses residents, and Buckley installing a new traffic light on SR 410.
