Water safety has been a common theme this summer on Lake Tapps, with good reason. East Pierce Fire and Rescue (EPFR) has hosted summer Splash-Tacular events at Pierce County North Tapps Park since 2008. Due to the drowning at Allan Yorke Park last year, EPFR has decided to beef up the annual Splash-Tacular event by adding a second date at Allan Yorke Park.
The Sumner Senior Center held its inaugural health and wellness fair Friday. Program Director Melissa Holt said the senior center receives a lot of visitors seeking information about healthy living but are simply overwhelmed by the prospect of searching for it. The fair provided a central location for seniors and their families to gather information, make community connections and earn free prizes.

The Son of Reptile Man came to Allan Yorke Park July 9 for the first week of Bonney Lake’s Kids Club summer presentations. Kids Club events are free of charge and held every Monday at 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday at 11 a.m. until Aug. 27.
The Pierce County Council voted unanimously July 2 to enact a moratorium on the marijuana market. The moratorium temporarily prohibits the location of marijuana-related facilities within Pierce County for six months.

Last month, Pierce County’s Party Intervention Patrol arrested 32 underage drinkers at a house party. The bust primarily involved Puyallup and Emerald Ridge high school students, but underage drinking is a county-wide concern.

A performance audit of the state’s public schools identified approximately 470 in Washington state as low-performing, according to Washington State Auditor Troy Kelley. The 267,000 students enrolled at them represent nearly a quarter of those depending on the public education system.
