Anyone with an oven can make a cupcake. But a close-knit group of Sumner entrepreneurs have made a business out of the sweet treats.
Jennifer Quaschnik moved her business, Indulge Cupcakes, to Main Street Sumner in October after opening the original location in Puyallup two years earlier.
“All our relations are in Sumner,” manager Julie Jones said. “Here we can sit on the deck and people will wave to us as they drive by.”
Quaschnik was intrigued after seeing a 2008 segment on the Today Show about a New York-based cupcake business. Soon after, she started doing research on the specialty bakery business model and clued in friend Jones and husband Darrin Quaschnik.
“It all kind of happened that day,” Jones said. “She had seen the segment and then she was coming to me with samples for packaging.”
The result is a combination specialty bakery and coffee shop. The storefront is housed in what looks like a residential home just outside Sunset Chev Stadium. Inside, customers are immediately greeted by one of the shop’s 14 employees.
Customers can order coffee, tea, espresso and smoothies, then hang out in the lobby, which is decorated like a pink living room with couches and a flat screen television.
The shop also offers packages for weddings and other events, with decorative box packaging to present them as gifts.
Indulge Cupcakes is located on 1913 Main Street and can be called at 253-447-7824.
