During the next few weeks the citizens of Buckley have an important decision to make. Should the citizens of Buckley approve a ballot measure to fund the cost of building a new fire station? As far as I am concerned, the answer is yes.
From time to time we are asked to pay the cost of the things we want to have in our community. We fund libraries, parks, systems to provide clean drinking water, sewage treatment plants and roads, just to name a few. We are willing to pay for these types of improvements because we use them every day, but it’s easy to forget we also use a fire station every day. Most of us never plan on having to call for the services from our local fire station, yet when we do we are glad it’s there.
Our existing fire station (it belongs to you and I) has served us well. We built this fire station 60 years ago because the one before it no longer met the needs of our community. History does repeat itself and again today we have a fire station that can no longer meet our needs.
We all recognize building a new fire station for our community is not cost free and for many this is a concern. Yet, we often give little thought to paying our monthly bills for our cell phones, cable television, electricity and those other services that give us comfort and make our life a little easier. I will feel better knowing I have a fire station that can provide for my family and community.
