As I sat in front of my TV on Sunday, March 21, watching C-SPAN’s coverage of the votes in the U.S. House of Representatives concerning “Healthcare Reform,” a phase came to mind:
“Qu’ils mangent de la brioche” – in English it translates: “Let them eat cake,” a phrase commonly attributed to Queen Marie Antoinette, and supposedly said upon learning that the peasants had no bread. Arrogance, condescension, disdain, even scorn were carried in those words. We all know how that worked out – not so good for Louie and Marie.
After more than a year of misinformation, smoke and mirrors and even outright lies I believe I have been a witness to what was possibly the first step toward the death of our great republic. Contrary to what many believe we live in a republic, a “representative republic,” not a democracy. We elect people who are supposed to represent us in government. Somewhere, somehow, a lot of folks in Washington, D.C., lost sight of this fact.
Now I don’t usually put much stock in polls, I have an intense dislike for statistics, but when just about all of them were showing the same thing, an overwhelming opposition to this version of healthcare reform, then even I had to take notice. But apparently a lot of those folks we sent to D.C. either missed this or purposely ignored it. Unfortunately I believe the latter to be true. I mean come on, how the heck could you miss (or ignore?) about 2 million Tea Party supporters on The Mall, thousands of e-mails, letters and phone calls? “Let them eat cake” has been coming through loud and clear.
The arrogance shown by the majority of the Democrats in the U.S. House, their leadership and the POTUS during the last year and a half should greatly concern every American who treasures freedom and liberty. The complete disregard for the will of “We the People” is amazing – and alarming.
In a little over 18 months President Barak Hussein Obama and the Democrats in Congress have achieved what progressives in this country have been trying to do for more than 100 years. Though really no one should be surprised, the president told us exactly what he was planning if you were listening. I quote from a speech five days before the election: “We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.”
Many of us agree that our healthcare system needs reform, but not this bloated big government nightmare that has been forced upon us. It is my hope that people will take the time to learn what this bill truly contains, because if they do I think most will realize what has transpired. It will take time to see the effects of this legislation and I think that those who supported it will live to regret it.
“Let them eat cake”…words, just words. Well here’s a few more: “I have not yet begun to fight.” “Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country.” Rallying cries in times of great need – like now.
