Letter to the Editor: Editor should be more discerning about hateful letters

Reader Brian DiNielli writes about his disappointment regarding another recently-published letter bashing people of faith.

Last week, a frequent contributor to the Courier-Herald wrote an explicit manifesto of hate and intolerance directed toward Christians (“You can’t be religious and reasonable at the same time”, published March 12). In so doing, he unwittingly soiled only himself not others.

Comments like these may sow the seeds of resentment, polarization and violence in our community.

The opinion page of the paper should be the public square where ideas can be vigorously debated within the bounds of civility, humility and mutual respect. It’s the job of the editor to ensure that boundaries are clearly established and enforced when making decision about publishing opinion pieces and LTEs. I implore the editor to do so.
