Letter to the Editor: I endured leaky roofs and no heat. Other students shouldn’t

EHS senior Elisabeth Stone urges voters to approve the school levy on this month’s ballot.

As the due date for the repair Levy approaches, I as a student want to express the importance of this Levy passing.

As many know, there are multiple repairs that need to occur immediately. Byron-Kibler Elementary arguably deserves the most immediate attention, with other buildings around the district following closely behind. BKE has a roof that has exceeded its lifespan and when it rains it leaks in classrooms and in hallways. Teachers and staff have been advised to put out buckets in areas where it leaks to avoid tripping hazards.

Students of the Enumclaw School District deserve a healthy learning environment and buckets in the middle of hallways and inconsistent room temperatures are not aligning with our standards of a happy and healthy learning environment. As voting members, it is your responsibility to help keep our schools up to par. It is crucial that you vote YES for our children so that they are able to receive high quality education in quality buildings.

I have attended the Enumclaw School District since I was in kindergarten. I am now a senior. When I was in fourth grade, Black Diamond Elementary was housed at JJ Smith while the new school was being built. During that time, there were days where heat was not available due to the poor HVAC systems. We relied heavily on space heaters during the winter which would blow the fuses and we would lose power altogether.

All kids going to school should be able to learn at comfortable temperatures. If your HVAC system in your home was bad, or your roof leaked every time it rained, chances are you would replace them immediately. Why wouldn’t you do the same for schools in the district?
