Letter to the Editor: Look at the Bible with skepticism

Reader Larry Benson calls for a critical eye toward humanity’s best-selling book

If we were to be skeptical when we are looking at religion, in just the same way we are about other things in our life, we would begin to understand how ridiculous a lot of things in the bible are.

Man thought heaven was just above the clouds, so it made sense to man that god would not want men to build a tower to heaven. God, however, would know that there was no need to hinder man from this endeavor because heaven is not just above the clouds.

The flood that supposedly destroyed all of humanity didn’t destroy many other cultures all over the world that flourished during the time of said flood.

God supposedly made the sun stand still so Joshua could kill more of his enemy — but since we now know that the earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around, we know this is not possible either.

Looking at the writings in the bible with any degree of skepticism can only lead you to one conclusion: The bible is just a collection of myths and fables, just like every other religion invented by man, like Odin in Valhalla, Zeus on Mount Olympus or any of the thousands of gods created by man over the centuries.

Critical thinking is important in all aspects of our lives, not just buying a used car. Just sayin’
