Letter to the Editor: Stop catastrophic shut down of foreign aid

Reader Amber Walker argues freezing USAID and other foreign aid funds makes America a weaker country.

The current Administration is making the U.S. weaker in the world. On January 24, the Administration issued a “Stop-Work Order” for all existing programming funded by U.S. foreign assistance. This action is catastrophic for communities around the world and ultimately undermines U.S safety and credibility internationally.

Overnight, the order created chaos. Would people lose access to lifesaving medicines and treatment? Would doctors, nurses, and health workers be able to see patients? Would moms get prenatal care and safe childbirth services? In addition, programs to combat human trafficking, to provide shelter for people escaping war, and core nutrition, water, and sanitation programs are at risk.

Stopping all aid without any warning takes the United States backwards in making America safer, stronger, and more prosperous. Our ability to help other countries and also have eyes and ears on the ground in those countries keeps America safer. I urge Dr. Schrier, and Senators Cantwell and Murray to publicly oppose the Stop-Work Order, and push for its immediate reversal.
