It felt like a disaster movie, dodging downed trees and power lines, the car shuddering with each crazy gust of wind. The November 19th bomb cyclone left a trail of destruction in Enumclaw, blocking roads and knocking out power for days. I made a stop on my way to work at St Elizabeth Hospital. A man hoping the library would open asked me if I knew any place in town that was open for food. I drove him to the hospital with me, hoping the backup generator might mean the Cafe was open.
We entered behind an elderly couple, and another gentleman came behind us. There were people scattered about in the restaurant itself, and people were lined up for to-go boxes. Not only was the Cafe open, but the staff had set up a limited menu, buffet style, to feed any who were in need.
It struck me so forcefully how many Enumclaw residents were in homes with no power and no way to prepare food. Enumclaw has many elderly and single people who might not be capable of self care in a time of disaster like the storm.
The staff at the St Elizabeth Hospital could have chosen to close doors except for patients. Instead they used what was on hand, with limited power, and made sure anyone who had need could come purchase a hot meal. The staff worked long hours to provide for the community. Enumclaw is a special place, where one sees neighbors helping neighbors. And I’m so proud to say I work with such selfless and kind staff at St Eizabeth Hospital. Kudos to each of you who chose to show personal kindness to one and all. May it come back to you manyfold!
