The term “Pyrrhic victory” refers to Pyrrhus, a third century B.C. general who defeated Roman legions twice. Unable to obtain enough replacements to sustain his losses, he said words to the effect of “One more such victory and we lose everything.” Similarly, a Cadmean victory refers to Cadmus, a mythological Greek who lost an army save five men killing a serpent, a victory equally devastating to both sides.
We all have had a lot of storm-damaged trees during our just past storm season. Right? A large portion of us have had piles of debris which must be burned. Right? So we did get a current “Residential Burn Permit,” plan properly to follow its 12 stipulations and have a carefully tended fire. Right? So everything is OK to burn it all up. Right?
Congratulations and best wishes to Brian Beckley and his new fiancee. Thank you for having the the kindness in your heart to recognize your joy and to wish that for others.
While I can appreciate Scott Spanier’s choice to treat homosexuals with kindness, dignity and respect, I take issue with his supposition that being a homosexual is a behavior, rather than a civil right issue. Any reference to the Bible is a non-issue. How can you put so much stock in the ancient writings of ignorant sheep herders? It has no place in the government.

I do not share Brian’s enthusiasm for the recent decisions by the Washington state legislators and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in legally recognizing marriage for homosexuals. Brian said, “I’ve heard all the arguments against gay marriage and I find them all to be bigoted piles of horse pucky.” So to not cast pearls before swine, I would like to address a few of Brian’s cow scat arguments.

What services do you expect your Enumclaw city government to provide? Do you expect them to pay for operation of the library?
Ever since I can remember there has always been a small but very vocal segment of the population trumpeting the idea of “separation of church and state.”
Our local fire district recently took out a two-page ad in The Enumclaw Courier-Herald. I was surprised to find out Fire District 28 is planning on asking for multiple, long-term tax increases to build a new costly fire station and pay for expanding operating costs

I’m extremely happy that King County decided to reopen the transfer station for recycling for several reasons. There will be less garbage dumped in the woods. People can recycle instead of disposing recyclables in landfills. People won’t have to burn and bury.
First off I would like to say I believe we have very good firemen working for District 28. Firemen as a whole are just plain great people and do great work.
