We must move away from identity politics

Mr. Trump recognized the legitimate concerns of the “working class” and socio-economic middle class which have born a disproportionate negative impact from many of Washington’s policies.

In Mr. Elfers opinion piece in the Sept. 12 issue of The Courier-Herald he reviews an article by Francis Fukuyama in the Foreign Affairs Magazine “Against Identity Politics.

In his opinion piece Mr. Elfers inserts the claim that “President Trump has played on the feeling that the power elites have ignored the white working class in favor of the poor and immigrants.” This statement is made without attribution to the original article by Mr. Fukuyama.

I suspect that Mr. Fukuyama’s article has little to do with President Trump and everything to do with identity politics and their negative impact on our political process. Mr. Trump recognized the legitimate concerns of the “working class” and socio-economic middle class which have born a disproportionate negative impact from many of Washington’s policies as they relate to immigration, energy, trade, etc., and an erosion of the American culture. President Trump’s actions since elected demonstrate he is truly concerned with the concerns of the middle class and is working to address these concerns.

Interestingly, Mr. Fukuyama’s suggestions re: “Identity Politics” are actions that those who believe in the Constitution and the founding principles would whole heartedly support, would those on the left say the same?
