Carnivorous plants, a sadistic dentist, and, of course, rock music — the Enumclaw High School Drama department bringing it all to the stage as they perform “Little Shop of Horrors” later this month.

The show, which began as a black horror comedy film in the 1960s and gained widespread popularity after an 1980s off-Broadway production, is about lonely flower shop employee Seymour who, in looking for ways to keep the business running, comes across a mysterious plant that he discovers will grow if fed human blood. The plant, as it appetite increases, starts to speak, promising Seymour to help his dreams come true — so long as he finds ways to sate its hunger.

Pining for love and overwhelmed with his newfound fame and success for discovering this plant, Seymour continues to feed Audrey II, until its demands start to strain his meek, gentle, and moral nature.

EHS Drama will be performing the live musical this weekend, March 18 and 19, as well as March 24 through 26 at 7 p.m.; a matinee show can be caught on March 20 at 2 p.m. All shows will be at the Enumclaw High School auditorium.

Tickets can be bought at enumclawperformingarts.com; admission is free, but attendees are encouraged to pay-what-they-can, or donate $5 at the door.

Leading the show will be Harry Gomes as Seymour, Mercer Akeson as love interest Audrey, Preston Wright as shop owner Mr. Mushnick, and Riley Abrahamse as sadistic denist Orin Scrivello.

Voicing Audrey II will be Josh Schampera, while Kaya Albright and Ryann Sweetser will be its puppeteers.

The book and lyrics are by Howard Ashman, and music is by Alan Menken, both of who wrote for the original off-Broadway musical.
