Happy new year! Among the events scheduled to happen in 2023: The Washington State legislature convenes Jan. 9 for a 105-day lawmaking session; the IRS will begin accepting tax returns Jan.24; a solar eclipse will be visible Oct. 14 along a narrow path from Oregon to Texas; and India is projected to surpass China as the world’s most populous country, each containing more than 1.4 billion people.

Crystal Mountain New Year’s Eve Bash: Starting at 5 p.m. on New Year’s Eve at Crystal Mountain, the ski resort will host a celebration with night skiing, live music and fireworks at the slopes. Music and contests start at 6:30 p.m., and the fireworks start at 9 p.m. Warm clothing and flashlights are encouraged.
Jan. 1
“First Day Hike” at Nolte State Park: Enjoy an easy 1.4-mile guided hike starting at 10:30 a.m. near the day use restroom at 36921 Veazie Cumberland Road. The hike will include a discussion of forest and lake ecology. Wear sturdy footwear and layers. Leashed pets are allowed.
All hikes are free and a Discover Pass is not needed to park on state managed lands in general this day; it’s a free parks day. Check hike and park descriptions to confirm details.
Jan. 13
Comedy night: Comedian John Caparulo performs at the Chalet Theatre in Enumclaw (1721 Wells Street). Doors open 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30.

Big Top Gun Sale: Guns, knives, and ammo as well as other personal safety items and training will be on sale that Saturday and Sunday at the Enumclaw Expo Center starting at 9 a.m. The gun show closes 6 p.m. on Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday. 70s Party at the Chalet: Boogie down at the Chalet Theatre. This far-out evening will feature two Stonesy, a Rolling Stones tribute, and Diamond Star Halo, a 70s glam rock band. Doors open 7 p.m., the show starts at 8.

Rock out at the Chalet: Pat Benatar tribute “Invincible” and The Cars tribute “Good Times Roll” play at the Chalet. Doors open 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8.
Jan. 29
Spa Day at Blue Rooster: Enjoy wine and a massage at a spa day hosted by Blue Rooster coffeehouse and wine bar from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets — $85 — include a 20 minute chair massage, complimentary drink and appetizers. Located at 331 Highway 410 in Buckley.
RECURRING EVENTS
Cascade Foothills Chorale season starts: The CFC’s season begins Jan. 8, with rehearsals every Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Calvary Presbyterian Church (1725 Porter Street). Open enrollment for those interested runs from Jan. 8 through the 29th. Membership dues are $50 per person, per season, or $25 for students ages 16 or 17. Formal concerts are scheduled for June 3 and 4th.
Free county services: The King County Department of Local Services holds office hours every Thursday at the Enumclaw Library (1700 1st Street) from 10 a.m. through 1 p.m. Locals can get free notary service, support with building permits or pet license applications, and general information about county services. Email access@kcls.org for accommodation for disabilities.
Kaleidoscope Play & Learn: This is a free drop-in class for kids from birth to five years old. Kids and their caregivers get to learn, play and sing together with other families in the community at the J.J. Smith Elementary School at 1640 Fell Street. Event takes place every Tuesday from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
Snow on Cole: You can plan on snow falling on Cole Street every Friday and Saturday from now through Jan. 28, 2023, so long as the weather holds. The event, organized by the Enumclaw Business Owners Collective, is free to attend — grab a hot meal (or cold beer) and sit around a pit fire and enjoy the spectacle.
Brewskis with a Newsie: Come meet your local journalists on every first Wednesday of each month at Cole Street Brewery (1627 Cole Street, Enumclaw) from 5 to 6 p.m. This is an informal event where residents can pitch stories, fact-check articles, and talk shop.
