This week’s cartoon by Frank Shiers, Jr. mourns the death of former Governor Booth Gardner, who held office for two terms from 1985 to 1993. He died Friday in his home in Tacoma, at age 76. The cause was complications from Parkinson’s disease.

Gardner was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1994. The Booth Gardner Parkinson’s Care Center of Evergreen Health Care was named for him.

One of his final major political victories was to lead the successful voter initiative campaign for the Death With Dignity Act, which allowed doctors to prescribe a lethal dose of medication to consenting terminally ill patients.
