A senior home repair program sponsored by Kiwanis and the Bonney Lake Senior Center’s senior advisory board received a sudden injection of funds from Home Depot at the end of 2009.

The Home Depot in Bonney Lake donated $2,000 to the program during the first week of December. The donation came just a few days after the home repair supply store hosted a senior workshop before opening on Nov. 29. Employees also volunteered time to the home repair program.

Kiwanis and the advisory board began the program three years ago as a way to assist seniors in maintaining their homes. Volunteers perform jobs such as repairing porches, replacing furnace filters or simply gathering firewood. Senior Center Senior Aide Phil DeLeo currently oversees the program.

The donation came in the form of a store gift card, allowing it to be used solely for project materials.

“It was overwhelming,” said Sue Hilberg, who manages the senior center and screens home help recipients. “We didn’t expect such a great amount, or anything at all, honestly. Home Depot came through with flying colors.

“They support this community and especially seniors in this community. For them to do this, and at this time of year when seniors need it most, is just wonderful.”

The senior senter is located at 19304 Bonney Lake Blvd.
