What satisfies you?
There’s a difference between enjoying something and being satisfied by it. Most people make the mistake of chasing enjoyment rather than satisfaction. As a result, their lives are filled with things that do not fill their souls. It’s like a diet of snack foods – you get a certain enjoyment out of it, but in the end you wish you had eaten a regular meal.
Jesus said, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work” (John 4:34). In other words, he knew where satisfaction is found. He understood there is no substitute for pleasing God.
When my son was a toddler, he played soccer. As a parent, I learned quickly that his purpose in playing was to win my praise. Every time he made a play, the first thing he did was look to see if I saw. If I did, then he was happy and he charged after the ball again. But if he made plays and I didn’t notice, well, he started looking for some other way to win Dad’s praise.
You and I are built the same way; we have a fundamental desire to please God. Don’t think so? Look for a chance to please him today, take advantage of it and watch what happens.
The Rolling Stones were wrong. You can get satisfaction. You just have to know where to find it. Give it some thought and I’ll see you on Sunday.
Be true!
