About This Poem Wheatley began writing poetry at thirteen, modeling her work on the English poets of the time, particularly John Milton, Thomas Gray, and Alexander Pope.
Phillis Wheatley was born around 1753 in West Africa. At the age of eight, she was kidnapped, brought to Boston, and sold to John Wheatley. Although they brought her into the household as a slave, the Wheatleys took a great interest in Phillis’s education, and encouraged her to write poetry. When Wheatley published her collection Poems on Various Subjects in 1773, Wheatley became the first African American and third American woman to publish a collection of poetry.
