When you think of memory care, what do you picture? How about games of cornhole, jewelry-making and Spanish lessons?
Those are among the activities that residents here at Expressions at Enumclaw take part in. Through our award-winning memory care program Expressions, we create meaningful experiences that bring joy and fulfillment to our community.
For many caregivers, finding time or ideas for activities for their loved one living with memory loss is difficult. From the day-to-day tasks assisting their loved one in managing their disease, appointments, and their own job and family requirements, curating an activity calendar tailored to their loved one’s needs can be incredibly challenging.
That said, there are some great options for ways to engage with your loved one.
If you’re looking to get outdoors for a while with them:
- Gardening
- Trips to a dog park
- A walk through a forest
If it’s an indoor type of day, a few options can include:
- Going through family photo albums
- Working on a puzzle
- Reading the newspaper together
For those living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, keeping active can have tangible benefits. Not only does it enhance quality of life, but according to the Alzheimer’s Association, staying active can even reduce wandering, agitation and other behaviors associated with the disease.
Of course, activities are not a one-size-fits-all proposition for those living with cognitive decline. Some people can be overwhelmed by large gatherings and withdraw, but that same person might thrive in a smaller group setting.
Everyone with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia has different ways of engaging with those around them – but finding their comfort and ability levels and acting accordingly can help bring out the best in them, and lead to a much-improved quality of life every day.
