A grassroots network of South King County locals will be celebrating raising more than $100,000 for local nonprofits during their next quarterly meeting.
100+ Women Who Care Foothills formed in July 2019, with the goal of bringing 100 women (and, yes, men are allowed too) together every four months with the pledge to donate $100 to a nonprofit doing good works in nearby communities every meeting.
The groups membership never quite got to that level, and the pledges aren’t binding, but four years later on April 10, 100+ Women will have raised nearly $113,000.
“It’s a huge accomplishment,” said co-leader Nikki Westover. “It feels amazing.”
Of course, she added, their work is not complete, and Westover hopes this year, they can finally break 100 members.
If you haven’t heard of the group and how they raise donations for nonprofits, here’s how it works.
When 100+ Women Who Fare Foothills meet, three nonprofits come present the work they do in their community, which stretches from Enumclaw into Covington and Maple Valley. The nonprofits need to be nominated by group members to come present, but presenters are chosen randomly.
After the three nonprofits give their spiels, 100+ Women members vote to decide which group to donate money to, though that doesn’t stop members from donating more money to the nonprofits that are not chosen. At the last quarter’s meeting, Maple Valley-based Elijah’s Hope received more than $6,000.
For this quarter’s meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. at the AR Workshop in Maple Valley, the three nonprofits coming to present are Childhaven, Covington Storehouse, and the Tahoma Schools Foundation.
None of these nonprofits are local to Enumclaw or Black Diamond, but since 100+ Women members get to nominate what groups can come present, it stands that more local members that join would have more power to nominate Plateau-based nonprofits, Westover said.
