This is a popular and successful annual event, and citizens that attended attest to a much better understanding of their Police Department and the Criminal Justice System. Plus, it’s a lot of fun!
The Bonney Lake Police Department is dedicated to enhancing community partnerships by increasing our citizens understanding of the criminal justice system through education.
What is a Citizen’s Academy?
The Citizen’s Academy is a free 7-week, two evenings per week classroom based course that includes hands on learning and mock scenes. Our goal is to facilitate a better understanding of the criminal justice system and local police services through education.
When is the Academy?
A time commitment of two evenings (Tuesday & Thursday) per week for 7 weeks is required. Class begin each year in March. Class hours are from 6:30 pm- 9:00 pm. There will also be one Saturday scheduled for the firearms simulator and emergency vehicle operations.
Are there any requirements?
Applicants must be 18 years of age or a High School Senior, live and/or work in the City of Bonney Lake, have a valid driver’s license, no felony convictions or outstanding warrants. All applicants are subject to a background check. There is no fee to attend and class notebooks will be provided to participants.
Where is Citizen’s Academy held?
Class is held at the Bonney Lake Public Safety Building, 18421 Veterans Memorial Drive E, in Bonney Lake, Washington.
What will I learn by attending the Citizen’s Academy?
The curriculum is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the operational dynamics of the Bonney Lake Police Department. Classes include criminal law, police patrol procedures, 911 communications, crime prevention, DUI/traffic enforcement, domestic violence, school violence, narcotics, and investigations. Demonstrations by the Metro SWAT and K-9, student participation in “mock scenes”, firearms simulator and emergency vehicle operations training add to the education and excitement. The course is concluded with a graduation dinner and awards ceremony.
