As he stepped down after 12 years of service as judge in Enumclaw Municipal court, David Berner had nothing but nice things to say about the experience. And others had high praise for the retiring judge. And all the while, Berner has seen his duty as the highest form of community service – an opportunity to make a difference in the community upon which he heaps lavish praise.

Possessing a salesman’s spirit and boundless determination, Dorothy Clark has succeeded in giving local firefighters a helping hand. Looking to raise $10,000 for potentially lifesaving equipment, she has exceeded 80 percent of her goal. She’s so close, in fact, that equipment has already been ordered. Her story has been chronicled here before, and Clark has been visible up and down city streets for months, looking to meet her lofty goal. Last year, after hearing about firemen who died in the line of duty, Clark realized she couldn’t bear the thought of other firefighters trapped in a smoky building, unable to see and incapable of saving themselves or helping others.

Scott Dahlquist does more than just play basketball for the Hornets. He was named Seamount League football player-of-the-year this season, and, last week was named to the All-State football team. The All-State team was picked by the Washington State Sportswriters Association. Dahlquist, who has helped the Hornets win three straight Seamount League titles, was picked to the Class AA defensive squad. He helped the Hornets establish a new school record with five straight shutouts this season.

Mr. and Mrs. James Lanphere of Elbe, experienced restaurant operators, have leased the Rainier Cafe from Mr. and Mrs. Fred Grant it was announced this week. The Lanpheres have announced that the generous portions of tasty, carefully prepared food, which was identified with the Grants operation of the cafe, will be maintained.

Next Tuesday evening New Year’s Eve, will see the opening of one of Enumclaw’s most popular resorts, the new enlarged Hi-Waye Lunch located one and one-half miles north of Enumclaw on the Black Diamond highway.
