“This will put you on the map for the whole state as one of the best,” Sen. Marilyn Rasmussen told Carbonado Historical School District students who gathered recently in the school gymnasium. Rasmussen was joined by Rep. Jim McCune, State Board of Education President Carolyn Tolas, representatives from the Office of Public Instruction’s facilities department and a mass of excited students and staff. The mood was festive because the small school was “officially” receiving its $25,000 Apple Achievement Award. Carbonado students were among 10 Washington public elementary schools to receive the money through the State Board of Education for achieving the greatest gains on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL).

A desire to return to western Washington combined perfectly with a vacancy at the top of the Enumclaw Area Chamber of Commerce. As a result, Esther Veltkamp has arrived to take the reins of the local business organization. Veltkamp, who spent eight years with the Sequim Chamber of Commerce before moving to Pasco for a short stay, began her Enumclaw experience today.

Some farm tractors speak for themselves. And about 30 years ago Garrett Enumclaw Co. built a farm tractor that can only be described as unique. At least that’s how Ron Olson, vice president and general manager, describes it. There are several “unique” characteristics about the farm tractor including twin engines and rubber tires. Rubber tires, you ask? Yes, when the tractor was built in 1956 there was no such things as rubber tires on tractors.

Photo: The camera records a panoramic view of Lorraine Street in west Enumclaw which was opened up by the Erickson Realty company this past summer. The Erickson Addition includes two streets to the east of Lorraine, Garfield Street and Harding Street, and when the development is finished in about two years, will also include Florence Street to the west.

An outstanding event of last week was a banquet given Thursday evening by the members and employees of the Enumclaw Cooperative Creamery in honor of Mr. Otto Tamm who has efficiently and faithfully served the organization as president of the Board for the past 28 years.
