Randy Iddings started riding his bicycle recreationally, as a way of taking care of his health and enjoying the outdoors. Fifteen years later, the Enumclaw resident is a two-time national champion. For 15 years, Iddings smoked a pack and a half of cigarettes a day. He had developed the habit when he was 15 years old. “I quit smoking at 30 and ski season helped me get through that,” Idding said. “And then it ended and I said, ‘now what am I going to do?’” He turned to mountain biking.

After 20 years of working for the Enumclaw Post office, Linda Hoffman finally has her own office with air conditioning, heat and a view of Mount Rainier on a good day. Things like that are precious to the support and customer service manager after years of working in the small, cramped post office on Cole Street.
Enumclaw High School’s track team members vaguely remember the cinder track that used to fill with water in the corners and tear up your skin when you tripped and fell. They were in junior high when the out-of-date track was closed to competition five years ago. But many of the former coaches and runners from past decades recalled the red rock oval and marveled at the modern rubberized surface before them Friday at the season-opening meet. “It’s much faster,” said former EHS star Tori Hall. “You can find the lane. You don’t have the old chalk lines that you could never find on the track. It’s a much better surface and facility.” Hall, a four-time state hurdle champion in the late 1980s and early 90s for the Hornets, set her school records on the road. Hall, an assistant coach for this year’s Hornet squad, was on hand with several others from bygone eras invited to usher in the new facility.
