Emotions ran high among a standing-room-only crowd at the Buckley Multipurpose Center, as citizens gathered to discuss possible locations for the city’s proposed new fire station. The Oct. 25 public hearing, the fist of two meetings scheduled, was called by members the Buckley City Council. They were hoping to gather input from city residents before moving forward with engineering work on the fire department’s proposal to build a new station on he Miller Property near downtown. With several of the city’s volunteer firefighters lining the walls of the council chambers, Buckley Fire Chief Alan Predmore presented attendees with information of the current fire station, which is no longer considered adequate for the department’s needs. The station was built in 1911 and renovated in 1998.

Anne and Frank Tost have seen a lot of Cumberland history and remember it fondly as the small community gathers this week end to celebrate its Diamond Jubilee. Frank Tost was four-years-old when his parents brought him to Cumberland. “And I’m 73 – so I’ve been here a long time.”… “There were dozens of mines here at one time,” Frank said. “They included the Hyde Mine and Bayne Carbon Fuel Company, and smaller ones like Occidental, Eureka, and Sunset. In about 1919, the Hyde mine had houses built up there and a hotel for the people. Cumberland was booming. It must have had well over 1,000 people.”
