Artists sought for new fall Scarecrow contest, Gallery 2020

The deadline to enter the Scarecrow Contest and the City Hall gallery are in October.

It’s looking like October is going to be an artsy month for Enumclaw.

First up is the city’s inaugural Scarecrow Contest, where individuals or groups of any kind can decorate a scarecrow to be displayed on Cole Street from Oct. 18 – 20. That Saturday, Oct. 19, will be the Scarecrow Festival, featuring crafts and face painting, pumpkin decorating, and haystack hunts. The festival will be when the public has an opportunity to vote for their favorite straw-stuffed friend.

The rules are simple: use durable objects, since the scarecrows may be subject to wind and rain; no glass, flames, or electricity can be used in the scarecrow’s design; scarecrows must be family-friendly and cannot promote politics, religion, or advertising; and the scarecrow must not exceed six feet in height.

In addition to a people’s choice category, a contest judge will also award prizes based on creativity, use of inventive or interesting materials, and its general presence.

The deadline to submit a scarecrow is Oct. 11; it must be delivered to City hall no later than 4 p.m.

Winners of the contest will be announced Oct. 24.

GALLERY 2020

Enumclaw is also looking for visual artists to showcase in city hall for the Enumclaw Gallery 2020 series.

The gallery accepts all sorts of two- and three-dimensional art, but with each exhibition lasting around four weeks — and since July is already reserved for the annual GEMs Miniature Juried Art Exhibit — there are only 11 spots to fill.

The deadline for submitting artwork is Oct. 18.

Those wishing to submit their artwork must provide the Enumclaw Arts Commission with eight electronic photos of their work (specifically jpeg images). Each photo must be labeled with the artist’s name, the title of the piece, its size, and medium.

These photos should be sent to Hibbs at ahibbs@ci.enumclaw.wa.us, or mailed to 1309 Myrtle Ave. in Enumclaw.

Once artists are selected for the gallery, they are responsible for providing an annotated list of their displayed artwork with an artist statement and short biography, and are responsible for any installation, labels, accompanying text, and sales.

For more information, contact Hibbs at her email or by calling 360-615-5621.
