Bridget Hanson, daughter of Rob and Jan Hanson of Enumclaw, was named National American Miss Washington Queen (Princess Division) at the National American Miss Washington pageant in Seattle.

The expected shootout at Pete’s Pool field between Enumclaw and Sumner turned out to be a Friday night football beast for the Enumclaw High School Hornets. The improving Enumclaw club took the game to the Spartans on the ground, in the air and in the trenches for a 41-0 rout. Both the Hornets and Spartans now hold 2-2 records and sit tied for third.

Thoroughbred trainer Frank Lucarelli won the 2004 training title at Emerald Downs with 52 wins for the season. Lucarelli, 47, is a resident of Enumclaw. For his career at Emerald Downs, he has 342 wins. He took out his license in 1979 while training at Longacres. The battle for this year’s title came down to the ninth race on Sept. 20, the final day of the racing season. This is the second time Lucarelli has won the training title at Emerald Downs. His first title came in 1999 with 43 wins.

Ten Years Ago

His demanding attitude sometimes catches people by surprise, but ask around and most can tell you his bark is bigger than his bite. It is that personality that has made attorney Phil Biege a downtown fixture in Enumclaw. Come Saturday Biege will not only be celebrating the milestone of turning 80, he also will be celebrating his retirement after 50 years of practicing law on the Plateau.

Coach Bob Kilmer has names for each of the seniors on his Hornet golf team. He calls one The Thinker, one The Player and another The Athlete. But whatever you call Mark Baker (Thinker), Isaac Woods (Player)and Andy Ainsworth (Athlete), they are three of the most successful Hornet golfers to make their way through the Enumclaw program.

Twenty-five Years Ago

September 27, 1984

Brion Stone, a senior at Enumclaw High School, has qualified as a semifinalist in the 1985 National Merit Scholarship competition. He joins a select group of about 15,000 students in the United States who scored high enough on the competition’s preliminary test to qualify as a semifinalist.

Autumn officially began on Saturday, and Sunday, Sept. 23, three to four inches of snow dropped down on the Crystal Mountain Ski Resort.

Gary Bietz, a former employee of the Jafco Company in Federal Way, has been named as the new manager of Graham’s of Enumclaw, a home furnishing store on Cole Street.

Fifty Years Ago

October 1, 1959

A six-month experiment of publishing the names of adult and juvenile lawbreakers, conducted by The Enumclaw Courier-Herald, is paying off. Enumclaw Chief of Police Joe Pedrini reported this week that since the newspaper instituted the new policy, violations are noticeably on the wane.

On the Corner: Walter Jensen lunching at the Lee… And Les Johnson with a group of friends at the same place… Betty Jo Leinonen picking up school supplies for her brood… Mrs. John Cobel calling to say that she has Virginia creeper growing in profusion… Ron Olson uptown from Garrett’s… And a phone call from Elmer Hyppa that he’s getting along well following additional surgery on the pesky leg.

Seventy-five Years Ago

October 12, 1934

Miss Eleanor Newman, daughter of the Frank Newmans of Enumclaw, has been appointed to assist Dr. Marvin Schaffer in the research department at the College of Puget Sound where she is a freshman.

Here are the facts about all the rumors going around concerning the infantile paralysis scare in Buckley. To date only one case has been reported, that of a first-grade boy.

Lister Johnson of the Normal School at Ellensburg spent Sun-day with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ole Johnson, here. Lister played in the football game Saturday between Ellensburg Normal and the University of Washington freshman, which took place in Seattle.

Word has just been received by Louis Such, local Hudson-Terraplane distributor, that the ruggedness car which has been named the Cascadian has started on its way. Enumclaw is on the route of this tour.
