In light of steady but constantly cycling enrollment, the Bonney Lake Food Bank is facing empty shelves during the transition to the holiday season.

“Our shelves are bare,” Food Bank Director Stew Bowen said. “We really need help from the community.”

The number of families served by the food bank month to month have not grown recently, Bowen said. However, new families are being enrolled all the time, suggesting that other families no longer want or need the assistance.

“The best way to describe it is a sustained barrage of clients,” Bowen said. “The bank is serving over 1,000 families in the area; that represents a sustained barrage of needs in the community. It is a full-on demand (on food bank services) all the time.

“The community has been a great help in the past. We need continual support from community, especially since we’re close to Thanksgiving,” he continued.

As the holiday approaches, the bank will not only have its day-to-day demands, its volunteers will attempt to put together holiday baskets for its clients.
