THEFT AND RANSOM: Police Oct. 4 were dispatched to Goodwill on state Route 410 for a theft complaint. The two victims advised police a female shopper had set down her purse to try on a sweater and discovered it missing three minutes later. A search of the store failed to recover the purse, which included identification, credit cards and some cash. The following day, one of the reporting parties called police to report that he received a text message from his wife’s phone in response to a message he sent offering a $500 reward for the bag. Police conducted surveillance of the proposed meeting and after the man received the purse, officers moved in and contacted the suspect. The suspect said her sister and some unidentified friends brought it her residence in Enumclaw and she only wanted to return it to the owner. After it was determined that the only thing missing from the purse was $20 in cash, the victim decided not to prosecute. The $500 reward was not given to the suspect.
SHOPLIFTING FOR JESUS: Officers were dispatched to Walmart Oct. 6 for a report of a shoplifter. Store security reported watching a suspect exit the store without paying for a boxed computer and then placing the computer in the bushes behind the Goodwill bin in the parking lot before walking back toward the store. As police arrived they saw a suspect matching the description given by security and contacted him. A records check revealed the individual to have a warrant out of Snohomish County for theft and he was arrested on the theft charge as well as his warrant. Police located the computer, valued at $890, and returned it to the store. According to the report it was “obvious” the suspect had mental conditions. The suspect told police he was bipolar and had been released from an institution six times. He also stated he was Jesus Christ and was told by a higher power to come to Bonney Lake. He was cited for theft and then transported to Pierce County Jail and booked on his warrant.
DUI: Police on Oct. 9 were dispatched to the 19800 block of state Route 410 for a report of a two-car collision. When police arrived, the found one car with significant rear-end damage. The driver was uninjured and pointed to a private driveway where he said the truck who hit him had stopped. Police located the truck, which had front-end damage and two deployed airbags and contacted a woman standing near the vehicle, who identified herself as the driver at the time of the accident. The driver of the truck told police the car had stopped unexpectedly and she was unable to stop in time. She could not provide a valid drivers’ license. Police noted she was not wearing shoes and appeared drunk, though she denied drinking alcohol.The driver failed several field sobriety tests, including giggling and burping during one of the tests and failed to follow instructions during a preliminary breath test. She was arrested and transported back tot he police station where she blew a blood alcohol test of more than three times the legal limit. Police also found marijuana and a smoking device in her purse. She was cited for DUI, unlawful possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. She was also issued infractions for no license on person, no valid operator’s license and failure to provide proof of insurance. She was booked into Buckley Jail.
A RUDE DRUNK: Police were called to the Union 76 station on state Route 410 of a report of a drunk male in the store trying to fight customers and being rude to the employees. Police noted that he was “extremely intoxicated and had difficulty standing upright.” A record check found he had an outstanding warrant for driving with license suspended out of Auburn. He was arrested and released to the custody of an Auburn police officer.
