A correction on the recent Enumclaw School District bond story, “Bond Chats”, a sentencing update, and more.

CORRECTION TO BOND STORY: The Courier-Herald misreported some numbers concerning the bond the Enumclaw School District is placing on the February 2023 ballot. The bond measure is for $253 million, not $243 million. Additionally, if the bond passes, the tax rate for the bond itself is $1.53, not $1.12, making the total 2024 estimated combined tax rate $4.19, if the bond passes. The online article has been updated with accurate numbers. Speaking of the bond…

BOND CHATS WITH ESD: The school district is hosting three “Bond Chats” featuring a presentation about the bond. The public will have the opportunity to ask questions. The first chat was Monday, Dec. 13, but another is scheduled for Jan. 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at J.J. Smith Elementary, and a third on Jan. 24 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Black Diamond Elementary.

HOWARD HANSON DAM PROJECT: The $220 million secured by Senator Maria Cantwell to fund the fish passage project at the Howard Hanson Dam is one step closer to actually getting used. To proceed, the project must be authorized through the National Defense Authorization Act, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Dec. 8 in a 350-80 vote. Next, it goes to the Senate. The fish passage project would open up dozens of miles of pristine habitat for salmon.

ALLAN/JOANN THOMAS SENTENCING: Allan and Joann Thomas were scheduled to be sentenced for defrauding Enumclaw taxpayers and the county on Dec. 9. Their sentencing date was moved to Jan. 6, 2023.

THE SEQUEL BUILDING DAMAGE: The Courier-Herald is aware that an individual damaged The Sequel building after our recent report about the owner being arrested on suspicion for child porn possession and solicitation. We have requested the police report, and an article about the incident will be published shortly.
