Four local business professionals are scheduled to speak on “Aging In Place” at the Buckley Senior Center Monday.

Senior Center Director Jennifer Bacon said the mid-morning event is designed to provide area seniors, their families and their friends with free information and resources to help seniors live in their own homes as long as possible. The community event is part of a National Aging In Place Council movement to increase discussion of seniors’ issues among family members.

The NAIPC notes there are various organizations, groups and businesses dedicated to working with and helping seniors, but that a lot of the information is often not shared or known among those entities. It is hoped that the Buckley event may spark enough interest in the Aging In Place movement to form a local AIP chapter. The chapter’s goal would be to provide consistent, coordinated dissemination of information from all sources.

Monday’s event will begin at 10:30 a.m. and run until noon.

Mark Kafentzis, from Buckley’s Edward Jones’ office, will be one of the speakers, as will NAIPC member Gary Knutson of Frank and Sons Construction in Tacoma. Knutson will discuss current senior-friendly remodeling trends, while Kafentzis will explain financial products like long-term health care insurance.

Aaron Starfire, general manager of Maxim Companion Services, will address in-home care and will provide a nurse to give free blood pressure screenings.

The fourth speaker will be Edwin Hoffmann of Buckley, a licensed loan originator and NAIPC member, who will discuss the pros and cons of reverse mortgages in the current financial market.

Legislators from the state’s 31st District have been invited, and organizers from several nonprofit groups have also expressed an interest in attending.
