Chinook Pass is set to open this Friday, freeing east-west travel on SR 410 for the summer after our relentlessly cold and wet spring.
The official reopening time is 8 a.m. on June 10, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
The pass opened late this year because “relentless” snowfall made for a ton of clearing work for WSDOT crews, the department said.
Historically, WSDOT aims to open the passes by Memorial Day each year. That’s always dependent on weather, though, and this has been a particularly cold and wet spring. (The passes typically close each November.)
Next door, Cayuse Pass opened May 27. That pass connects SR 410 to SR 123, allowing travelers from Enumclaw to reach Packwood and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest on the west, or White Pass to the east.
Chinook pass opened May 28 last year, June 4 the year before, May 23 in 2019, and June 11 in 2018.
Chinook Pass is one of four main passes that allows travel between the east and west sides of the state. Monroe and Leavenworth are connected by Stevens Pass on Highway 2. Snoqualmie pass allows travel from Snoqualmie to Ellensburg on I-90. White Pass connects Packwood to Naches on Highway 12.
With Chinook Pass finally open, all four of those major highways will be open for summer travel.
