City Roads to be chip sealed | Bonney Lake

The annual Chip Seal project is scheduled to begin Monday, August 11, 2014 (weather permitting)

The annual Chip Seal project is scheduled to begin Monday, August 11, weather permitting. Drivers and motorcyclists are urged to travel slower (15-20 MPH) while driving on newly chip sealed streets.

Roads are chip sealed to keep them in good driving condition.

Each year, the street chip sealing process starts with preparation of the streets by City crews making repairs starting in early spring. Candidate streets are chosen based on condition surveys using the City’s pavement management system.

First, the contractor sprays the pavement surface with an asphalt emulsion onto which are spread fractured rocks. These rock chips are pressed into the emulsion with a roller several times before the road is opened for traffic. Depending on the wetness and coolness of the weather, roads are reopened as quickly as possible, usually no more than 30 minutes after the work started. Within 24 hours, the contractor will lightly sweep up loose rock chips. Then the City street sweeper will further sweep loose chips off the roads.
