Collins Alternative Programs interim principal Mark Westerfield was awarded the 2009 Outstanding Technology Leader of the Year by the Northwest Council for Computer Education (NCCE).
Westerfield was presented with this award at the NCCE Conference in Portland, Ore., in February. The conference draws more than 2,000 participants from across the Northwest. Nominees for the award came from Washington, Oregon, Montana and Idaho.
Westerfield earned this award through his collaboration at both the regional and state level, as well as his expertise in the area of technology integration and online learning. His background includes program certification in design and development of distance learning courses and as a conference presenter. He has served on multiple regional and state boards. He has actively supported technology integration into classroom curriculum in White River School District.
Muckleshoot art students display work
The Muckleshoot Library is hosting an exhibit of student photography titled “The Field Trip Exhibit” through May 11 at the library, located west of the amphitheater on state Route 164.
The event is part of the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, the Summer Youth Photography Program, the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe Youth Facility and the “Young Eyes Walk With Image Catcher” student photography exhibit series.
Students, representing grades one through 12, taking part in this exhibit include Julianna Arms, Isaiah Asphy, Jerico Blair, Christianne Brendible, Patience Daniels, Vivian Jansen, Jacob Jensen-James, Elijah Lobehan, Alannah Lobehan-Banks, Francisco Marquez, Virginia Marquez, Alexis Mason, Cheyenne Miller, Sefa Pedro, Dylan Self, Anthony Swanson, Alyssa Vaiese, Jennifer Daniel and Antonette Westcotte.
The library is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
Contest open to young poets
To celebrate National Poetry Month, the Buckley library hosts its fifth annual Wake Up to Poetry contest for students in grades 4 and 5 who live in the White River School District. Winners will receive a poetry book and be invited to present their poems to family, friends and the community at Elk Ridge Elementary School at 7 p.m. May 5.
