The city of Black Diamond is gearing up for its annual "Old Fashioned Fun" Labor Day weekend celebration Sept. 4 through Sept. 6.
The celebration will feature much of the old fashioned fun that has been carried on through the years and make the festival popular.
Rather than carnivals or games of chance, families can join the frog jumping contest, the three-legged race or the egg toss.
People can also watch the annual softball game between the fire and police departments. Crafts, food booths, entertainment and a parade round out the celebration. Kids can also join the kids parade, whether riding a bicycle, tricycle, roller-skates or a wagon.
The Chapel Wood Baptist Church is providing inflatables this year, and there will be a large obstacle course, a small bounce house and a slide for children's fun. Although it's free, donations are welcome.
A new attraction this year is the miniature pony rides. The cart rides start at the school and go around the senior residences and back again after the parade. Rides are $2.
The grease pole climbing contest has been moved to Sunday, and teams should sign up in advance that morning at the Labor Day booth.
Bryson Grant was the first-place winner of this year's Button Design Contest, and his design will be on this year's buttons, available for sale from many local merchants. Aubree Allen took second place, and her design is featured on the front page of the Labor Day program. Third place winner Taylor Stowell's design is featured inside the program.
Booth applications are still being accepted, and people interested should call Tom Mulvihill at 360-886-2182 for more information. Parade entry deadline is Sept. 3 to be considered for judging. People should call Maggie at Mount Rainier Bank, 360-886-0300, for more information. Volunteers are still needed during the weekend, and those interested should call Jill Senna at 360-886-1913 to sign up for shifts.
The Labor Day Committee is meeting at 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the Black Diamond Bakery. Everyone is welcome.
