Drivers in Bonney Lake’s Eastown section will have one more obstacle thrown their way this week when part of 234th Avenue East is closed to officially move the intersection.

The closure and move is part if the state Route 410 construction project currently underway.

According to MaryLou Nebergall, Project Engineer for the Washington State Department of Transportation, 234th between SR410 and 112th Street East will close at 6 a.m. today, Wednesday and should reopen no later than 10 p.m. Thursday.

Local access to 234th will be granted from 112th and detour routes will be signed. The road will still be open to emergency vehicles.

The closure will allow the contractor to complete the tie-ins to the new alignment of 234th. When the road is reopened Thursday, traffic will use the new intersection on SR 410 that is aligned with 233rd.

The signal will be operational at this intersection later in the summer.

The work is part of a $20.5 million project that began in March 2010. The construction will add a lane in each direction of SR 410 between 214th and 234th Avenues. The two lane road carries more than 20,000 vehicles a day heading to and from east Pierce County.

The project also adds a new traffic signal, raised safety median separating eastbound and westbound traffic, and revised traffic movements at the intersection of 233rd and 234th avenues east. Besides relieving congestion, these improvements will help reduce the potential for collisions.
