A project that adds lanes and a traffic signal to relieve congestion and improve safety on SR 410 is officially shutting down this week and will restart when drier weather returns this spring.

Crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) remain on schedule to complete the $20.5 million project that widens nearly 1.5 miles of SR 410 in Bonney Lake.

“Most of what is left to do on this project is weather-dependent work,” said MaryLou Nebergall, WSDOT project engineer. “We are going to give drivers a break from construction this winter and come back in the spring – it won’t affect the timeline and we’re still on target for project completion later this summer.”

In March 2010, contractor, J.R. Hayes & Sons, Inc., began working on the project to add a lane in each direction of SR 410 between 214th and 234th Avenues. The two lane road carries more than 20,000 vehicles a day heading to and from east Pierce County.

The project also adds a new traffic signal, raised safety median separating eastbound and westbound traffic, and revised traffic movements at the intersection of 233rd and 234th avenues east. Besides relieving congestion, these improvements will help reduce the potential for collisions.

During the winter suspension of work, SR 410 will remain in its current configuration and the reduced speed limit of 35 mph will continue to be enforced. When crews return this spring they will finish paving, stripe lanes, install curbs and switch traffic to a new alignment at 233rd Avenue.
