From a press release from East Pierce Fire and Rescue –
An early morning fire damaged a downtown Sumner business Friday. The fire was first reported at 6:58 a.m. at 1913 Main Street. The first unit arrived at 7:00 a.m. to find black smoke from the building. Indulge Cupcakes is located on the main floor. There are no other businesses in the two-story building.
The fire appeared to have started in the kitchen area at the rear of the building. Firefighters from East Pierce Fire and Rescue and Central Pierce Fire and Rescue contained the fire to the first floor and the basement. Several small fires were ignited by burning debris falling into the basement from the main level.
According to lead investigators at the Pierce County Fire Marshal’s Office, the estimated loss is in excess of $100,000, including structure and contents. The East Pierce Fire Marshal also participated in the investigation. Early reports are that the probable cause of the fire is electrical.
One firefighter and the owner of the business were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening medical emergencies.
No one was in the building at the time of the fire. The business was closed at the time.
